This is what a day in the life of a polar bear looks like as the species adapts to climate change. When sea ice melts in the summer, polar bears head to land and either search for food or fast and hibernate. Researchers attached cameras to polar bears in Canada to track their movement, behavior, body mass, and diet, among other things, to better understand how the species will survive as the ice melts at faster rates and they lose access to their preferred prey—seals. No matter which option a polar bear chose, to sleep or forage more, they all lost calories at around the same rate. The researchers found that there wasn’t significant benefit in foraging on land to prevent starvation, meaning that as the sea ice that they live and hunt on melts, they’ll be at an increased risk of extinction. #WatchThis #polarbears #canada #animals #climatechange
