Rubber tires are essentially composed of a single molecule of cross linked polyisoprene. The old tire patches I use in this video are little more than metal discs filled with a combustable mixture with a thin rubber patch on the underside. When the mixture is ignited, it gets hot enough to cause the rubber in the patch to vulcanize with the rubber in the tube, creating a strong airtight patch, in spite of the fact that these patches are more than 75 years old! #c#chemistrychemteacherphil #learnontiktok
00:33This is a very real toy designed for twelve year olds in 1936 by the A.C. Gilbert Company. And yes, it used molten lead to cast toy figures. Lead is a very toxic metallic element that can cause all kinds of developmental and neurological problems. However, handling toys made of lead is actually very low risk, especially if you wash your hands after handling the lead figures. This is because solid lead is not easily absorbed through the skin. This does not mean that we shouldn’t be worried about exposure to lead. Inhaling lead dust, or accidentally ingesting lead paint can lead to severe health issues. But with this toy, the main risk aside from the molten lead is the burn hazard it presents. The melting point of lead is 327.5 degrees Celcius (621 degrees F!) and there are lots of really hot surfaces on the toy as it is operated. I’ll bet lots of kids in the 1930s that had this accidentally burned themselves more than once! #chemistry #metallurgy #chemteacherphil

00:39Iron-based chemical handwarmers rely upon a simple oxidation reduction reaction to generate heat. The primary active ingredients inside the package are granules of iron, salt and water. The salt and water serve to catalyze the oxidation of iron with oxygen gas in the air forming rust. This process is exothermic, and you can really heat things up by adding a stream of pure oxygen to the handwarmer! I was able to get the warmer to heat up to 85C or roughly 185F! #chemteacherphil #chemistry #learnontiktok
00:31Making your own glow in the dark stars is not very difficult, and it involves a unique process called phosphorescence! Most glow in the dark materials use zinc sulfide that has had tiny impurities added to the crystalline material, most commonly manganese, copper or silver ions. These impurities alter the electron energy levels in the crystal, so that when light hits the powder, electrons get excited and trapped in the material's structure, unable to quickly fall back down to the ground state. After the light source is removed, these trapped electrons slowly release stored energy as light, causing the powder to glow. This phosphorescent glow persists even after the initial light exposure, which makes it useful for watch dials, signs, and of course, those glow in the dark stars you put on your ceiling. If you want to make some like I did, just mix some glow powder with some white glue or mod podge and paint onto thick paper or cardstock (I used watercolor paper), cut out your shapes and put them where ever you’d like! #chemistry #phosphorescence #chemteacherphil #learnontiktok
