In our home we count socializing (In person and virtual) and making friends as part of the domestic labor load. Yes, making friends is fun but the community that I'm building doesn't just benefit me. It benefits my entire family. We are not from this area and we don't have family living near us so any sort of support we have, has been built from the ground up. And having solid support saves us time, money, and enriches our lives. Having a supportive community is an investment. No, we don't want to see our friendships as transactional, but when I am taking time out of my day to make a meal for a sick family, dig through our books to find a resource for a friend whose kid is potty training, buy presents for a birthday party, Go over and help set up that birthday party, and coordinate, schedule, and follow through with play dates and social events- What I'm doing is strengthening the bonds between myself and the people in my community and my actions will often result in reciprocal actions from those people. So when we got sick, we had meals show up at our door. We needed a babysitter, I knew someone who knew someone who had a good recommendation. When we had to take one son to the ER in the middle of the night and needed someone to come stay with the other son, my community was there. My husband and I see the value in socializing and building friendships, so we take that into account when we are considering what my domestic workload looks like from week to week as a stay-at-home mom (although now I am technically a work from home mom so that has impacted how we split the workload). And if I need to spend some hours at a playdate instead of getting the dishes done, that means that task rolls over to us splitting it 50/50 when he is also off of work. Not all socializing is community building, but a lot of it is and I believe that it should be respected and valued alongside other domestic duties. If you're interested in learning more about splitting the domestic workload, I highly recommend Eve Rodsky 's book @Fair Play + Unicorn Space #kelsewhatelse #domesticlabor #mentalload #fairplay #momtips #midwesternmom
01:27It's been 2 years and I still think about this very kind thrift store employee who spent at least 10 minutes on the phone with me trying to find (or so I thought) Thor's Hammer. I did eventually find a toy Thor's hammer, by chance, in the clearance section of a Target on the other side of town. It was crucial that I have a hammer for the costume because without the hammer, nobody would have known who I trying to be. Slob Thor, just looks like a bearded guy in pajama pants without his hammer. I had already purchased all the other pieces to the costume and I was going in a group of Marvel characters. And I did not win the costume contest. But I also didn't lose! The group that hosted the party never announced who won the contest 🤷🏼♀️. BUT the video I took of my pregnant Thor transformation ended up going viral in several countries so that was kind of a weird win! . . . . #kelsewhatelse #pregnantthorcostume #funnystory #kindpeople #midwesternmom
01:27This is what our kids are getting in their Easter baskets this year! For context, we are currently in a never-ending battle to declutter our house (feels like we're losing most of the time!) So I am aiming to keep our Easter baskets as junk free as possible! Everything we picked out for our kids' Easter baskets this year are either consumable (candy) or something that I know they will use all spring and summer long. If you are looking for kids' Easter basket ideas and you too want to keep it a simple, junk free Easter basket, then I highly recommend some of the items below! - Classic Easter candy- Reese's pieces carrot and M&M minis -Spiderman Make a Face Stickers - Book: Dino Dana Field Guide to Dinosaurs - Imagine Ink Coloring Book - Beaded 7ft Jump rope -Kwik Stix Tempura Paint Sticks - Reusable water balloons (with embedded magnets) - Parachuting men (tossing toy) . . . . #kelsewhatelse #kidseasterbaskets #easterbasketstuffers #easterbasketideas #momtips #midwesternmom #kansascityinfluencer
00:48My kids often have their screens in the back of the car when we're on a long drive , but for the times when we want to be screen free, one of our activities is listening to shows like a podcast! Most of the time while in the car, we're listening to music, talking to each other, they have car toys they can play with, and we listen to actual podcasts, but sometimes It's fun to surprise them with their favorite episodes! We kind of accidentally found out one day, when my phone automatically connected to the Bluetooth and started playing their favorite show, that they are happy listening to a show even if they can't see the screen. After all, they have watched these shows 4 million times. They know exactly what's going on! We just make sure to download the shows first that way we're not using a ton of our internet and running down our battery. It also gives the kids a chance to use their imagination to fill in the blanks when they don't understand something. #kelsewhatelse #momtips #roadtripwithkids #kidscaractivities #midwesternmom #toddlerroadtrip #podcastforkids
00:34We laughed so hard we could not breathe while playing March MAN-ness! I highly recommend this game for a bachelorette party game, a book night game, or just a girls' night activity. Our bride is super into books, movies, and TV shows. So we polled her friends from different eras of her life, to know exactly which characters to use in a head-to-head bracket! We used characters from her favorite series/shows when she was a teenager (Twilight, Hunger Games, High School musical, etc) But of course, for the sake of the argument, we aged the characters up to whoever they would be at age 30- the age of the bride. And we chose characters all the way through her college years and beyond to present day (Oh hey Khal Drogo!) We battled it out arguing over who was the ultimate Man in each round based on three criteria: 1. Best husband 2. Best in bed (it is a Bach party after all!) 3. Best at basketball And our ultimate winner was Mr. Darcy (Keira Knightley version). Although you can tell by end of this video that not everybody agreed 😅 I highly recommend this game for a bachelorette party, or girls night! It was a fun way to honor the bride by showing how much we knew and loved her! #kelseywhatelse #bachelorettepartygames #bacheloretteideas #bookclub #marchmaness
01:02This happened on pi day, 2009 (3.14). And I remember vividly that it was pi Day because the doctors didn't want to put me under anesthesia because I had eaten pie in my first hour math class that morning! I had liked this boy for nearly 2 years! We were really close friends, but I wanted to be more than friends. I thought that going on this beach trip would give us an opportunity to spend more time together and for him to finally fall in love with me. And the whole thing was almost derailed by a dislocated jaw! Another fun fact, that other couple that went on the trip, (my friend and her boyfriend) are also married and have a kid and we are still good friends and still go on vacations together! . . . #kelsewhatelse #midwestmom #piday #funnystory #lovestory #tmj
01:29Today I hit the jackpot while I was shopping, and it is all because someone else didn't. It's relatively easy for me to find tops in-store but bottoms that fit and seem to actually be made for my plus-sized body, are few and far between. (I will say that Old Navy is one of the more size-inclusive stores which is why I shop there, but it still doesn't have everything in my size- because they typically order less stock of it for the store) When I found this skirt and it fit, I found myself thinking about the other plus-size woman out there who, knowing the store wouldn't carry her size, ordered this skirt online without being able to try it on, waited with hope for it to be delivered, didn't end up liking it, and then had to drive it back to the store to return it to a place that does not even have a section for it. And because she did all of that, just to be ut that day, I was able to leave the store with a skirt that was actually in my size. I owe the confidence I felt in the dressing room that day, to her. So just a reminder to those who have to order special sizes (Plus Size, Tall, Petite, XXSmall) online, just to have to return them when they don't fit, you might be making someone's day by putting clothing in their size, in the store. Thank you. . . . . #kelsewhatelse #plussize #midwesternmom #plussizehaul #plussizefashion #kansascity
01:12This is a story about human goodness on this beautiful March 1st! 10 years ago I was gifted a plant that I thought surely would die because while I try, I know I am a bad plant parent. But it lived, and it kept living, and eventually I decided that it would be best for the plant if I give it to someone who would truly take care of it and ever since then, Planty's new mom has sent me video and picture updates his life and it is the most adorable thing ever. Thank you @happybabyfox for loving Planty so well! . . . . #kelsewhatelse #heartwarming #goodhuman #badplantmom #kansascity #midwestmom
01:27We do our best to fairly split the domestic workload at home. These are the daily tasks that keep a family home running. I thought it might be helpful to show exactly how we split the workload of family travel. The way I have it split in the video is the way we often split the work, but it doesn't always look exactly like this. Sometimes we will trade tasks (ex. He packs the kids' clothes and I pack the car ) or split tasks (ex. We both work on the daily itinerary/ booking flights) And sometimes one of us will end up doing more work than the other just because of the way the schedules lay out or our kids' needs. But what does "fair" look like? For us, it's not about having equal amounts of things on our lists. Because not all tasks have the same weight. Loading the car with bags, doesn't take nearly as long as it takes to sort out and pack all the kids' clothing. Booking a rental car takes 5 minutes, but finding an Airbnb can take hours. Booking and paying the dog sitter takes a couple minutes, but cleaning the dog sitter's room and bathroom takes much longer. And sometimes one of us will take the kids out of the house and leave one partner to do most of these tasks with the kids out of the way. No matter how we split it, our goal is that each of us is capable of fully taking on ownership of every task and that at the end of the day, we both have put in the work, and carried the burden so we can each have rest time. We find that this is a key to having a more restful family trip! Working towards a 50/50 split and maintaining this balance in our home is a continuous effort on both of our parts.
