For Michael, eye contact helps convey emotions, build connections, and enhance understanding between individuals, providing a meaningful way to communicate without words. Especially because he is nonspeaking, eye contact became one of the first things we incorporated into every aspect of our daily interactions, and it serves as the foundation for our joint attention play therapy activities. He has gone from having no desire and avoiding eye contact to utilizing it meaningfully, intentionally, and purposefully. He now shares his love and joy through eye contact and can even read “between the lines” by interpreting different facial expressions and the nuances of eye contact paired with those expressions. This progress would not have been possible if we had simply assumed Michael "couldn't" make eye contact due to the common belief that it is ‘painful’ or ‘unnecessary.’ Because no two autistic individuals present the same traits, think the same way, or feel the same way, it’s important for us as parents to trust in our approach with our own children, and learn through our lived experiences what is best for them — all while also staying educated and informed in positive, child-centered parenting. Having said that, I understand why eye contact is often a controversial topic. Much like all controversial topics surrounding therapies like ABA or exposure therapy, the effectiveness and ethicality of eye contact training rely heavily on how it is implemented. Forcing eye contact in a way that causes distress or discomfort is counterproductive and harmful. However, when approached with sensitivity, respect, and a deep understanding of the individual child's needs, it can become a powerful tool for communication and connection. The key is to prioritize the child's comfort and autonomy, ensuring that any form of therapy is a positive and empowering experience. 📔 ebook: collection of Joint Activities that naturally promote Eye Contact in Bio Link 🔗 📌Teaching Dining Experiences and Concepts Using Modeling and Experiential Learning Introducing dining experiences to Michael was done effectively with modeling and experiential learning through gradual exposures to various restaurant settings. Given the Covid restrictions in place at that time, the crowd levels were significantly low, which was always helpful. To create familiarity and routine, we chose one specific restaurant to frequent. We would visit our local restaurant 2-3 times a week for short durations, ordering simple foods that are quick to prepare and arrive, like a house salad, house bread, and his beloved fries. This specific selection of foods made the waiting times manageable while he remained seated, completing the meal before we closed off the experience. 👑 Our Step-by-step Guide shared on the IG Subscribers’ Page 👑 #parenting #autism #ASL #signlanguage #nonspeaking #nonverbal #inspiration #motivate #autismawareness #autismjourney #neurodivergent #parentingtips #representationmatters #cute #handsome #toddlermom #autismadvocate #autismparenting #parentingautism #communication
01:26While this may seem like a typical moment for most children, Michael's journey has been anything but typical. To say otherwise would diminish all the hard work and effort that Michael and we have put in to reach this point. Understanding what Michael can and cannot do relies on us helping him discover his strengths and weaknesses. If there's something he can't do, we support him until he can. The best way to uncover this is by spending as much time as possible with him, intentionally and meaningfully. This is yet another reason why sending him to traditional schooling would do him a disservice, as it would not provide the best support he needs in the same way a parent’s vested interest, care, and love can. 📌Autism is associated with differences in brain structure and function, which can impact motor control, coordination, and physical strength. Addressing these challenges often requires targeted interventions, such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, and adapted physical education, to help autistic children improve their physical coordination and strength. 👑 The full mini-vlog in our approach to education and therapy on our IG Subscribers Page 👑 📔eBook on Joint Attention & collection of activities, link in BIO 🔗 #parenting #autism #ASL #signlanguage #nonspeaking #nonverbal #inspiration #motivate #autismawareness #autismjourney #neurodivergent #parentingtips #representationmatters #cute #handsome #toddlermom #autismadvocate #autismparenting #parentingautism #communication #foryou #fyp #explorepage
01:17It's important to raise awareness that not all autistic children exhibit the more commonly recognized behaviors like hand flapping, rocking, or spinning. Many children, like Michael, may not exhibit the common visible traits. However, one of the most noticeable traits for Michael, is his need for a pacifier. Continued use of a pacifier by an autistic child is rather a beneficial tool that can help them regulate their sensory systems and reduce stress. Often, children on the autism spectrum will use their mouths to explore their environment, to self-regulate & cope with sensory overload or needs. Mouthing objects can pose a danger to their safety, as the object could contain harmful chemicals or be a choking hazard. Michael is also a severe chewer — but does not have Pica. And so, Pacifiers provides that sensory stimulation, while also being safe to put in his mouth — and most times, it even acts like a “stopper” to prevent him from mouthing harmful objects. Having said all that… The main purpose of this post was to say, "Hello Summer Short Haircut, by Mommy! 👑 Daily mini-vlog in our approach to education and therapy on our IG Subscribers Page 👑 #parenting #autism #ASL #signlanguage #nonspeaking #nonverbal #inspiration #motivate #autismawareness #autismjourney #neurodivergent #parentingtips #representationmatters #cute #handsome #toddlermom #autismadvocate #autismparenting #parentingautism #communication #foryou #fyp #explorepage
00:26Effective communication through ASL is fundamental for anyone in the family aiming to maintain a strong bond with Michael. As Michael becomes more proficient in his language, there might be some growing distance between him and family members who are less skilled, but currently, that isn't my primary concern. 📌Continued in Pinned Comment at the end of the video 👑 Approach to education and therapy, along with exclusive updates, on our IG Subscribers Page 👑 #heartwarming #sweet #cute #parenting #autism #ASL #signlanguage #nonspeaking #nonverbal #inspiration #motivate #autismawareness #autismjourney #neurodivergent #parentingtips #representationmatters #cute #handsome #toddlermom #autismadvocate #autismparenting #parentingautism #communication #foryou #fyp #explorepage
00:58This year, we celebrated Grandma's birthday with us and FaceTimed our family in New York for the birthday cake singing. One of the joys of having an intimate celebration is the stress-free atmosphere—it makes the process more enjoyable when there are no expectations other than our own happiness, and that's exactly what we achieved. 📌Many have asked about Michael's hair cutting experiences, and I've shared several videos on how I cut his hair at home. However, we've been letting his hair grow out to see if keeping it long and adding a wavy perm might serve as a practical alternative to frequent haircuts. So far, this is showing potential — and I think he looks so adorable with wavy hair.🥰 👑 Daily approach to education and therapy, along with exclusive updates, on our IG Subscribers Page 👑 #heartwarming #sweet #cute #parenting #autism #ASL #signlanguage #nonspeaking #nonverbal #inspiration #motivate #autismawareness #autismjourney #neurodivergent #parentingtips #representationmatters #cute #handsome #toddlermom #autismadvocate #autismparenting #parentingautism #communication #foryou #fyp #explorepage
01:29Children with apraxia of speech require a motor planning approach to speech therapy because apraxia is fundamentally a motor disorder that affects a child's ability to plan and execute the movements necessary for clear speech. Through exercises that focus on motor planning, Michael learns to feel and hear the difference between correct and incorrect movements, promoting self-correction and independence in speech. Currently, our therapy and education approach is child-led and play-based. I integrate exercises while he is engaged in activities he enjoys, allowing us to keep our targets adaptable and responsive rather than rigidly structured. As Michael's educator and therapist, I customize our activities to match his natural rhythm and timing, ensuring that all our interactions are self-motivated and initiated by him. This method not only aids in our speech therapy efforts but also promotes the development of a broad spectrum of skills, enhancing his cognitive, physical, social, and emotional abilities. 👑 Daily approach to education and therapy, along with exclusive updates, on our IG Subscribers Page 👑 #heartwarming #sweet #cute #parenting #autism #ASL #signlanguage #nonspeaking #nonverbal #inspiration #motivate #autismawareness #autismjourney #neurodivergent #parentingtips #representationmatters #cute #handsome #toddlermom #autismadvocate #autismparenting #parentingautism #communication #foryou #fyp #explorepage
01:35Allowing Michael to safely explore potentially dangerous things like using a gas stove under close supervision provides numerous benefits and can be a highly constructive and educational experience for him. Participating in these activities together strengthens our trust and communication, as he learns to rely on me for guidance and support when his curiosity drives him to engage in such activities. Supervised exposure to potential dangers also teaches him crucial skills in risk assessment and management, essential for making independent decisions. Moreover, engaging him in learning about things that pique his interest, even if they pose risks, fosters a love of learning and cultivates a curious and inquisitive mindset. Most importantly, this approach teaches him the significance of safety and caution, instilling a sense of responsibility in managing potential dangers responsibly. Now more than ever, we're particularly vigilant with supervision, as he's exploring his surroundings more thoroughly and his curiosity and interests lead him to places and objects that can be dangerous or unsafe. 👑 Daily approach to education and therapy, along with exclusive updates, on our IG Subscribers Page 👑 ⚠️ This is a glimpse into our journey with my nonspeaking autistic son, documenting his progress, and offering insights for anyone who may benefit, learn, or find inspiration. ⚠️ When my son experiences intense emotions, I give him space and wait until he's ready for affection. 01:29For many, this might seem like an ordinary moment, but in our family, we're celebrating it as something extraordinary. It's the moment where Michael is actively asking me to teach him new words. Michael now knows over 500 ASL words to communicate his wants and needs, though his usage is often prompted. And so, the significance of this moment lies not just in the spontaneity of his request, but also in that it marks our first meaningful back-and-forth conversation on a topic of his shared interest. For this post, I could detail all the observations, insights, and my personal approach to educating and providing therapy for my son that have brought him to this point. However, I'll simply leave this here to permanently mark yet another turning point in his autism journey. 👑 However, you can find our daily approach to education and therapy, along with exclusive updates, on our Subscribers Page 👑 #heartwarming #hearttouching #parenting #autism #ASL #signlanguage #nonspeaking #nonverbal #inspiration #motivate #autismawareness #autismjourney #neurodivergent #parentingtips #representationmatters #cute #handsome #toddlermom #autismadvocate #autismparenting #parentingautism #communication #foryou #fyp #explorepage #viral
04:34Traveling offers a rich mix of sensory, physical, and cognitive stimulation that simply can't be replicated in a controlled setting. While conducting therapy and education in real-life environments can be unpredictable and often more challenging than in controlled settings, we do our due diligence to plan, prepare, adapt, and embrace each situation as it comes. Yet, it’s precisely the unpredictability of our experiences that has significantly accelerated Michael's progress. This is where our collective ability to adapt and adjust becomes crucial in supporting his needs. 📌Our focus is on identifying and addressing challenges as they arise, and intervening as early in his life as possible. And we cannot identify these challenges without exposing ourselves to the full spectrum of life experiences, which can be overwhelming in both positive and negative ways. However, this exposure is necessary not only for understanding and addressing his needs effectively but also for helping him navigate and adapt to the complexities of the world around him, in practical and meaningfully ways. This is where traveling itself has become the most effective therapy and education for Michael, offering unique benefits that no program, institution, or professional service can replicate in a controlled, scheduled environment. And this is why I’ve embraced exposure as the foundation of Michael’s therapy and education. Although we fly only 2-3 times a year, each journey over the past four years has taught us something new about Michael—his emerging abilities, capabilities, and personality, all of which contribute to his the key developmental milestones he has reached today Each month, we make a concerted effort to explore somewhere new, whether it's a local destination or somewhere further away, to continue enriching his experiences. 👑 The full mini-vlog & insights of our flight experiences and New York adventures, on IG Subscriber’ Page. #heartwarming #parenting #autism #ASL #signlanguage #nonspeaking #nonverbal #inspiration #motivate #autismawareness #autismjourney #neurodivergent #parentingtips #howto
01:30Michael is capable of eating while seated at a table and even demonstrates good manners in fine dining environments. This isn’t because we strictly enforce seated dining at home. Rather, we give him the freedom to move around at home while practicing seated dining in public spaces. This way, he often enjoys the activities he is focused on so much that he doesn't protest his meals and finishes them completely. Additionally, as long as the food is appealing, Michael will eat a variety of foods that many children typically resist, such as super greens, mushrooms, onions, and garlic. This is all made possible by allowing for movement into mealtime, which has continued to help expand his palate with these challenging foods under the guise of fun. 📌Understanding the direction of turning wheels and or using a cart to push and pull significantly helped in developing direction perspective skills in Michael. These activities require him to maneuver the cart in various directions, which reinforces his understanding of spatial relationships and directionality. By actively choosing to turn left, right, push forward, or pull backward, he learns to anticipate and execute movements relative to his environment. This hands-on experience is crucial in helping him grasp concepts like map reading, following directions, and participating in spatially oriented activities such as sports and dancing. As he makes decisions about movement and observe the outcomes, he also becomes more adept at using environmental clues and landmarks, enhancing his navigational skills and cognitive development. 📌Michael gets at least three hours of physical exercise daily. A moving body stimulates a moving mind. Additionally, the physical exercises we naturally engage in help address any primitive reflexes he hasn't outgrown. Whether he's playing in his playground, running outside or inside, or interacting with everyday objects like carts and cars, he's actively lifting, climbing, pushing, and pulling. He's also eating and having fun connecting with us all at the same time. #parenting #autism #ASL #signlanguage #nonspeaking #nonverbal #inspiration #motivate #autismawareness #autismjourney #neurodivergent #parentingtips #howto
