No one plans on becoming a co-parent, and I can vouch that it's no easy journey. But here's what I've learned over the past 12 months that may help if you’re struggling… By the way, I just launched a free parenting community on FB where parents, single, co-parenting, or traditional—can exchange support, ideas, and uplift each other. 🔗 on my profile to join us! Firstly, always remember, the goal of co-parenting is to raise healthy, HAPPY children. #1 - Trying to control your co-parent's actions is like fighting the tide – exhausting. Accept that they might have a different parenting style, and if they're not taking your advice, it's time to let go. #2 - The emotional rollercoaster is real – anger, hurt and frustration will become familiar passengers. But don't offload these emotions onto your co-parent. It's a waste of your energy. Instead, find ways to work through your feelings and seek closure on your own terms. #3 - Communication is key, but so is the method of communication. Choose a method that works best for both of you, minimizing conflict. Whether it’s through text, email, or a co-parenting app, clear and respectful communication will help in managing schedules and discussing your child’s needs without unnecessary drama. #4 Boundaries. There's no need for your co-parent to have a backstage pass to your life now, and the same goes for you with theirs. Communication is key, but you only need to communicate with them about what is necessary. #5 Prioritize consistency for your child across both homes as much as possible. While you can't control what happens in your co-parent's home, you can strive for consistency in rules, expectations, and routines in yours. #6 Stay in your own lane. This is about you and your child/children. That’s all your focus needs to be on. #7 Speaking badly of your co-parent in front of your kids is off-limits. No matter the situation, that person remains their parent. Shield your children from adult conflicts to protect their peace of mind. #8 The stress of co-parenting can take a toll on your mental and physical health. Make time for activities that rejuvenate you. Stay strong. 🖤
