1 year ago we made history at the Junos! 😤 I've never told the behind the scenes story but I think it's time for me to finally tell y'all how we pulled this off. I was nominated for Breakthrough Artist of the Year and the Junos had originally only wanted me to DJ between commercial breaks, but we asked them if I could actually perform during the live broadcast. No one had ever performed at the JUNOs in Punjabi before. Or any South Asian language for that matter. But with Jalebi Baby being such a huge hit in both the east and the west, we knew that this was the perfect opportunity to fight for that moment to finally happen!! and hopefully open the door to more South Asian performances in the future 🙏🏽 🇮🇳🇵🇰🇱🇰🇧🇩 Honestly we just thought the tons of brown people in Canada deserved to finally see one of their own perform on this stage in their native language - and the entirety of Canada should finally see and celebrate the big moves that artists from Canada are making around the world! 🌎 May is coincidentally Asian Heritage Month, and as much of a win this moment was for South Asians, I wanted to rope in our East Asian brethren into it too. Because if we're going to win and make progress in the west, its going to be together. I pitched the idea to perform together to @SimuLiu, and he was instantly down. I'm not gonna lie, I was pretty nervous lol. I had never performed live on TV and in front of such a huge audience. In fact i'd barely performed at all..and I had to both sing AND dance lmao The JUNOs gave us exactly 90 seconds, and we rocked every single one. Can't wait until next time! 🙏🏽👊🏽 #tesher #simuliu #asianmusic #asianheritagemonth #aapimonth #Asian #indian #punjabi #desi #bhangra #Indian #jalebibaby #representation #Canada #junoawards #browntiktok
