According to many nutrition ‘gurus’ in 2024, potatoes are pure sugar, bread is bad for our health, fruit makes us fat and cereal is toxic. There is nothing wrong with eating potatoes. They are not pure sugar. They are a satiating carbohydrate and a source of micronutrients. There is nothing wrong with eating bread. It isn’t bad for our health. Bread may not be as satiating as other foods, but it isn’t inherently harmful, nor does it make us fat. There is nothing wrong with eating fruit (or any food). Fruit doesn’t make us fat. It’s also a hugely dense source of micronutrients and fibre. There is nothing wrong with eating cereal. While some cereals aren’t particularly nutrient dense, that doesn’t make them inherently harmful. In 1960, nutrition advice appears to have considered context, been more sensible and evidence based.
